Iron House

Richmond, Virginia

This project is a five story mixed use project the upper floors house condominiums while the first floor is used for parking and retail space. The building has an interior atrium which allows daylight to flood the condo entrances. The majority of the units have private exterior spaces.

The Iron House Building is an adaptive reuse of a one story, existing brick shell which was first home to a auto-mechanic shop and then the "Iron House Gym." Four stories of residential construction were added to the brick base and the original structure was repurposed as retail and parking to create a mixed use building, enhancing Broad Street in the VCU neighborhood. Prominent features of the building include a modern steel and brick facade which is staggered to incorporate balconies overlooking Broad Street. The rear facade, clad in alternating vertical and horizontal ribbed siding, has projected steel balconies with views of Richmond Skyline. The interior common area contains a four story atrium allowing light to deep units through interior glass windows. Curved bridges span the atrium. Protected with steel guards with cable rails, the bridges provide access to the units and are are accented with wood cherry paneling to match the elevator shaft. Three large skylights flood the atrium with light, creating a continuous pattern of light and shadow against the dark stained wood. The interior units are designed with upscale features, adding a modern, mixed use buidling to the rich fabric of downtown Broad Street in Richmond.
